Freeze Drying Consulting and Scale-Up

Advice from people who build the machines and run product on them. That combination is rare, and it changes what the advice is worth — a consultant who has never owned the uptime gives different answers than one who has.

Sizing

The arithmetic, applied to your product

Most sizing engagements exist because someone was quoted a machine and had no way to check the recommendation.

We run the sequence on your product: characterize it, set the batch weight, compute the water load, derive the sustained removal rate, and match condenser, refrigeration and vacuum against that rate. The method is published in full so you can check us, and check anyone else.

The deliverable is a specification you can put out to multiple vendors, not a specification that only we can quote.

Cycle Development

Getting a recipe that survives production

A cycle developed on a benchtop at 8mm loading depth does not survive a production tray at 25mm, and finding that out at scale is expensive.

Freeze rate, pretreatment, loading depth, shelf temperature staging, chamber pressure, and where primary drying ends and secondary begins. Developed on your actual material, documented, and handed over as a recipe you own.

For heat-labile material the binding constraint is usually collapse temperature, which is why those cycles cannot be shortened by adding heat and why a recipe copied from a similar product tends to fail.

Equipment Selection

Including telling you not to buy

We sell machines and we run contract product, so we have no structural reason to steer you either way.

Sometimes the answer is a smaller machine than you were quoted. Sometimes it is contract work until volume is real. Sometimes it is a different architecture entirely because the shelf cannot serve your product. All three of those are answers we give regularly, and the arithmetic behind each is the same water-load calculation.

Scale-Up

From proven product to production line

The gap between a product that works and a line that runs is mostly the things nobody costed.

Utility load, heat rejection, material flow, labour per cycle, packaging integration, and the QA record you will need when a customer asks about a batch. Costed before commitment rather than discovered after.

What does a freeze drying consultant actually do?

Sizes the system from your product’s water load, develops the cycle recipe on your actual material, and helps select equipment — including advising against a purchase when contract work is the cheaper answer.

Will you tell me not to buy a machine?

Regularly. We run contract product as well as building machines, so the recommendation is not steered by what we have to sell. The crossover between contracting and owning is arithmetic: annual water load against per-run cost against the cost of ownership.
