Most second-hand freeze dryers are sold by people who have never built one. Here is what we look at when we assess a machine — use it on ours, or on anyone else’s.
A stainless chamber outlives everybody. The components that determine whether a used system is a bargain or a liability are the ones you cannot see in the listing photo.
The condenser and refrigeration. Compressor hours, refrigerant type and whether it is still legal and available, coil condition, and whether the system still holds condenser temperature under load rather than at idle. A machine that pulls down in an empty chamber tells you nothing.
The vacuum system. Pump hours, oil history, seal condition, and whether it reaches and holds working pressure with a wet load. Ultimate vacuum on a dry empty chamber is the number sellers quote and the number that matters least.
Controls. This is the one that quietly ends a machine. An obsolete controller with no parts and no support turns a functioning system into a paperweight the first time a board fails.
Shelves and seals. Flatness, internal fluid passage condition, and door seal integrity — the cheap-looking items that decide cycle uniformity.
Ask these of us too. A supplier who will not answer them is telling you something.
How many hours on the compressor and the vacuum pump? What refrigerant, and is it still supported? Is there a controls parts path, or is the controller obsolete? Can it hold condenser temperature under a real load, and is there a log to show it? What was it running, and how hard did that product load the condenser? Why is it being sold?
That last question is not rhetorical. A machine sold because a business grew is a different machine from one sold because it never made the cycle.
"Reconditioned" is an unregulated word. Here is the version worth paying for.

A reconditioned system should come with a stated scope of what was inspected, what was replaced and what was left alone — plus a controls path that is supported going forward. Without that written down, you are buying a photograph.
Compressor and vacuum pump hours, refrigerant type and whether it is still supported, whether the condenser holds temperature under load rather than at idle, and above all whether the controller is obsolete. An unsupported controls platform ends a machine faster than any mechanical wear.
It can be, if the refrigeration and controls have life left. The chamber almost never limits a machine’s life; refrigeration, vacuum and control support do. Size it against your water load first so you know whether the machine can do your job at all.
